Salt reminds us of high blood pressure, fried food, and unhealthy eating habits. That doesn't seem like something we should be spreading around. One might argue that throwing out salt "to trample underfoot" is a necessity this winter due to all the ice and snow. Trying to explain what Jesus meant by his analogy "You are the salt of the earth" to young Christians posed a challenge.<div><br /></div><div>We thought about something we eat that makes us feel good. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good for our bodies, but how would your friend respond if you gave them some Brussels Sprouts as a sign of God's love? That analogy didn't seem to be quite right either.<div><br /></div><div>Inspired by Valentine's Day, we thought that perhaps chocolate is a better analogy. The kids described making chocolate chip cookies or brownies and agreed that these were some of their favorite foods, and were something to share with their family and friends. They meet at 11am on Sundays and on Wednesday evenings. We enjoyed meeting together over coffee in January, and are so happy to be able to provide them a temporary facility. <br /><br />We are collecting supplies and cash donations to send <a href="http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umcor/getconnected/supplies/health-kit/">Health Kits</a> to Haiti through UMCOR. Joan Eaton is leading this effort. Our new sign has been delivered and will be installed this month, allowing us to finish our landscaping project. The Wednesday weekly Bible Study group continues to read <span style="font-style: italic;">The Shack</span>, while our smaller monthly group studies Psalm 23. This is an especially good service for children, who will receive a Palm Branch and learn about Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem<br /><br />April 5: Choral Cantata, 5pm, First United Methodist Church in Amesbury (<span dir="ltr" style="font-size:-1;"><span class="street-address">146 Main St</span></span><br /><span dir="ltr" style="font-size:-1;"><span class="locality">Amesbury</span>, <span class="region">MA</span> <span class="postal-code">01913). </span></span>The Hopeful Cluster of Churches (Byfield Community UMC, East Parish UMC in Salisbury, First UMC in Amesbury, Good Shepherd UMC in Haverhill, Merrimacport UMC and People's UMC in Newburyport) will present Worthy! by Marty Parks. This is a free event, and a wonderful way to kick off Holy Week! A reception and fellowship time will be held after the concert.<br /><br />April 9: Maunday Thursday service will be held at <a href="http://www.merrimacportumc.org/">Merrimacport UMC</a> (39 High Road, the corner of River Rd and High Street, Merrimacport, MA) at 7pm. This service will focus on the Last Supper and Jesus' preparation for the crucifixion<br /><br />April 10 - 11: A vigil will be held from noon on Good Friday through Saturday night, the time when Jesus was in the tomb. The sanctuary will be draped in black and the church will be open for personal prayer, reflection, reading devotionals and quiet meditation. Sign up for a half hour or longer by calling the church office.<br /><br />April 12: PUMC's Easter Celebration Service will be held at 9am. We meet at LeeAnn's, 4 Goodwin Ave, at 7pm. This group is ideal for those who are new to Bible Study or folks who are looking for a less frequent commitment. Due to Thanksgiving, the next meeting will be November 18. In addition to this group, the regular Wednesday evening study continues to meet each week at 7pm on Parker Ridge Road. <br /><br />We are continuing to collect school supplies for our "School Bags for Africa" project. She asked the church if we are intersted in providing No.2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, large pink erasers, spiral-bound notebooks, construction paper, blunt-nose scissors or rulers (must have metric markings) for the bags. She is also looking for help in stuffing the bags and shipping them. If you'd like to help or provide money, please leave a comment on this posting with your contact information (email or phone). Sewing and packing bags will be planned with the residents of the James Steam Mill.<br /></li><li>We are making and distributing <a href="http://www.shawlministry.com/">Prayer Shawls</a>. If you would like to make a shawl (must be machine washable) or if you know someone who would like a shawl, lap-blanket or stole, please let us know. Prayer shawls can be knitted, crocheted, quilted or any other form of soft material. We dedicate and pray over the shawls before giving them to those in need of warmth and comfort during illness, loss or other difficult time. The prayer shawl ministry group is sharing patterns, and is also considering meeting together to make the shawls with one another. This is a great opportunity for ministry on your own time, at your own pace, that really touches lives. It is also a wonderful way to learn a new craft!<br /></li><li>Saturday Evening Worship begins Saturday, October 4 at 4pm. We know that not everyone who would like to join us in worship finds Sunday at 9am to be a convenient or even a feasible time for their schedule. For those who are looking for an alternative, we will be offering this Saturday Worship option. The service will reflect of the gifts of the congregation. He has also led the Hoperful Cluster of United Methodist Churches in Lenten and Advent Cantatas for the past 4 years. We have all enjoyed his humor, his stories, his patience, and his musical talents.<br /><br />To celebrate his musical gifts and leadership, we will have a choir sing-along and reception on June 22 at the church at 4pm. Choirs from the Good Shepherd UMC in Haverhill, First Parish UMC in Salisbury, Amesbury UMC, Merrimacport UMC and Byfield Community UMC are invited to join People's UMC Newburyport by bringing an anthem to sing.
